The Qilianshan-Shaoshan high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission line is a major line transmitting electricity to Hunan from other province, with the highest direct-current electricity of ±800 KV. On February 28, an emergency fault occurred on this line. It caused an input power plump from 4 GW to zero, and a huge electricity shortfall in the province. At 15:50, Wuling’s centralized control center received a command from Central China Power Dispatching Center of the State Grid to shut down the line and start up all standby generator sets. The center immediately launched grid fault emergency response, and started standby generators to fill the electricity supply gap. By 21:00, electricity transmission of the line had been partly recovered. Hunan grid resumed orderly operation in a short time, and a large-scale power outage incident had been avoided.
To coordinate with this fault treatment, Wuling’s hydropower plants made 11 emergency startups of generator sets, with a peak output of 3.39 GW. They greatly contributed to ensuring safe and stable operation of the power grid. Wuling’s centralized control center and its affiliated power plants were highly praised for their systematic dispatch, and decisive and rapid implementation of the commands.
